Tantrums are overwhelming! Both to parents and to small children. But they are not choices our children are making. A choice involves a rational conscious decision. Tantrums are the exact opposite of that. They are reactions to highly overstimulating neurochemicals flooding a child’s nervous system. Our children need our help to regulate their bodies when this is happening. They need us to offer compassion, understanding and care (and to remove all the sharp objects from their possession!) When we move into a connected and receptive body state it helps them to borrow our calmness which helps them feel safe and enter a more regulated brain state.
